Jelena Bibic - Q&A #3

Interviews with JEKA

Excerpts... Naples, South West Florida USA

How would you describe yourself as an artist?

The word that springs to mind is eclectic. Even though I’m probably best known for my paintings of Eagles’, I’m not a one-trick pony. I would say I’m more of a chameleon. I like the challenge of artistically exploring and refining my skills in other areas also. My subject matter and artistic interpretations are continually evolving.

What other artistic mediums hold an interest for you?

Many, but mosaic and stain glass hold a place close to my heart and are areas I have previously trained in and would love to explore further. I especially find the latter fascinating. A specialised and rewarding technique that is difficult too perfect. The feeling I get when I see the sun shining through the panels of a coloured glass window, painting a picture and telling a story is undeniably satisfying.

How has Coronavirus affected you professionally?

In this worrying time of the pandemic, I have on the whole remained motivated and steadfast. As many have experienced, there have been professional disappointments, exhibitions postponed in the United States and my time in Miami and New York cut short. Still, in the scheme of things it’s of little consequence, compared to the suffering, heartbreak and loss others have to contend with right now.

How do you think Exhibitions will be affected in the longterm?

I think online galleries and private zoom type viewings will become the new norm. The Art World is a resilient, forward-thinking entity and always finds innovative ways of adapting in times of adversity.

What project are you working on at the moment?

Through the pandemic, I have reconfigured and adapted to the evolving situation here in Florida. I initially embarked on a project designed to highlight local sea birds in the region. But, with the eventuality of beaches being closed, I shifted focus to my Idol portrait collection, a project I had been meaning to turnaround for quite some time.

What materials are you using for your Idol project?

I initially used aquarelle and paper as a medium, before swapping to acrylic and canvas once the local art shops reopened, which was a godsend as I was running really low on ammunition.

What other projects have you got earmarked for 2022-23?

I have embarked on a new side project inspired by current world events, which has the working title “Circus”. A series of paintings that reflect my view on this upturned and divisive world we find ourselves living in. The circus is probably the most reactive project I have embarked upon since the last millennium, during an uncertain yet prolific period of my life journey. The 1999 NATO bombing campaign on my hometown Belgrade.
